Dr Protter is one of only five diplomats in Forensic Psychology (American Board of Professional Psychology; American Psychological Association) in the greater New York City area. This represents the highest level of specialized forensic training in the field. He has over the years specialized in both civil and criminal areas of forensic psychology; as well as in the assessment of security personnel and high risk patients.
FORENSIC ASSESSMENT IN PERSONAL INJURY / TRAUMA
Dr Protter currently does forensic psychological assessments for personal injury and psychological trauma. He has served as an expert witness for both plaintiff and defendant attorneys. He has specialized for over twenty years in the clinical treatment and assessment of stress conditions connected to trauma and injury. Dr Protter administered a specialized clinical service focused on these problems and has consulted to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to assess PTSD conditions. He has accrued extensive expertise in clinically evaluating and testing these types of disorders as it impacts on forensic considerations. He also has had training and experience in screening/testing for mild traumatic brain injury and post-concussion disorders.
FORENSIC ASSESSMENT / TREATMENT IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM
Dr Protter also has had extensive experience in the area of criminal psychological assessment and forensic consultation to the Criminal Justice System. Previously Chief Psychologist at the Bronx-Lebanon/Einstein Forensic Criminal Court Clinic (1978-1993), he has assessed and performed clinical forensic consultations on a wide range of acting-out, and impulse-laden problems as well as sexual paraphiliac disorders. While there, he co-founded the largest sex offender program in New York State. Currently, Dr Protter and his staff run a consultation program serving the New York City Department of Probation to assess and treat sexually acting-out individuals. His work in the area of sexual acting out disorders has led him to specialize in a wider range of sexually addictive and compulsive problems in the broader population. He also consults to other agencies and attorneys to offer assessment for high-risk, acting-out patients, and other specialized forensic evaluations (e.g. competency to stand trial; pre-sentence and NGRI evaluations).
PSYCHOLOGICAL SCREENING IN SECURITY EMPLOYMENT
For many years Dr Protter has done psychological screening on both a pre-employment and employment basis for security and law enforcement related personnel. He has held long-term contracts from the New York City Department of Probation, the New York City Department of Corrections, and the Unified Court System of New York State, the New York City Department of Homeless Services, the United States Coast Guard, the Federal Aviation Administration and Jet Blue Airlines.
FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGY TEACHING AND SUPERVISION
In addition to being extensively involved in the education and supervision of clinicians, Dr Protter has been actively engaged in the training of forensic mental health practitioners, including psychologists, psychiatrists and other mental health professionals. He has taught, supervised and developed programming in such academic settings as the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (Division of Psychiatry and The Law); The John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY, and the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies at Adelphi University where for a number of years, he taught the core course on Ethics and Professional Issues to doctoral Ph.D. candidates in psychology.
